Montreal's transportation authority has reimbursed a McGill University professor's taxi fares after his bus was late. In one case, Jeremy Cooperstock, pictured, took his beef to small claims court. The authority buckled before a judge got involved, paying the engineering professor $28 for his taxi fare, plus $100 in court and registered-mail costs. But the authority refused his demand for $15 in "compensation for stress" caused by one late bus, plus another $90 as "token punitive damages." A few months later, Prof. Cooperstock submitted a $12 taxi receipt; the authority quickly cut him a cheque. But Prof. Cooperstock said it's not about money. "I'm doing this to make a point of principle rather than profit from the inconvenience." He said he's fighting for improved punctuality, or least more realistic schedules and a faster, more responsive complaint system.
