Speech Analysis in Space

J. Payette, R. De Mori, V. Hayward A speech recording experiment several astronauts-speakers will be performed aboard the Space Shuttle during an upcoming mission. The objective is to record digitally a series of vocal commands and monosyllabic word patterns uttered by each crew members at several times during their multiple day space flight. This data will later be analyzed and compared to ground based samples to determine the impact of microgravity condition on voice production. This will serve as a basis for the design of an operational speech recognition system for use in space vehicles capable of dealing with noise and other conditions which prevail in such vehicles.
