A model for a hydraulic rotary tricone drill has been developed, based on physical assumptions and data from experimental (field) tests. The model consists of the machine actuators and the drilling process at the bit-rock interface. Based on this, a strategy for automatic control of such a drill has been formulated, based upon automatic variation of feed pressure and rotary speed.
