This research relates to the Robot Eye project. The goal is to achieve the design, construction and control of an orientating platform which will approximate human performance in terms of size, speed, accuracy and weight. The basic functional components of the eye are: actuators, mechanical sensors, and the structural and kinematic elements such as joints and members. The actuators, a central element in the project, exploit the shape memory effect of NiTi alloys which were recently vastly improved at the Biorobotics Laboratory. Their geometry allows the actuator to acheive up to 20
